Sermons on Epistles

The Letters of Paul

There are thirteen Epistles written by the apostle Paul:
Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.

Within this group is a subgroup labeled the Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon) so-called because they were written during Paul’s two-year house arrest in Rome (Acts 28:30–31).

The Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) were written to church leaders and include many teachings regarding practices within the early church.

Isaiah

On Being Thankful

Isaiah 12: 1-6: Israel’s Praise to the Lord 12 In that day you will say: “I will praise you, Lord.  Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away  and you have comforted me. 2Surely God is my salvation;  I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;  he has become my salvation. […]

Apostolic Appeal and Warning

1 Corinthians 4:1-19 Faithful Servants of the Messiah 4 This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed.  2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human […]

Corinthians

Overcoming Divisions

1 Corinthians 2 (NIV) 2 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came […]

1st Timothy

With Respect to One Another

1 Timothy 5-6 (selections) (NIV) 5 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. 3 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need… 7 Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be […]

And the Nominees Are

1 Timothy 3:1-13  (NIV) Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons 3 1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family […]

Philippians

Rejoicing in Knowing

Philippians 4:4-9 (NIV) Final Exhortations 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends […]
